The Advocates' Gateway International Conference – 20 June 2015 – The Law Society
Over 100 people attended the inaugural Advocates Gateway Conference at The Law Society on Saturday 20 June 2015 and what a day it was!
The title 'Addressing Vulnerability in Justice Systems' appealed to a diverse range of professionals such that the audience was made up of judges, advocates, intermediaries and academics amongst others.
Over the course of 7 hours those attending were treated to an equally varied set of talks from luminaries in both criminal and family jurisdictions, such as Sir James Munby, President of the Family Division and Professor David Ormerod QC, as well as respected speakers from other countries including Scotland, Ireland, New Zealand, and even an especially commissioned video message from Trevor Riley QC, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory of Australia.
The conference emphasised how 'vulnerability' is an issue not just for witnesses but for other parties, including defendants, and not just in the criminal justice arena, but in all areas of the law including civil and commercial cases. It also showed how the same concerns are being raised all over the world and how we can all learn from each after.
After the mixture of keynote speeches and panel sessions that took up the first two thirds of the day there was an hour of break-out sessions which allowed delegates the choice of attending presentations on interpreters and intermediaries; defendants, pleading and participation or avoiding miscarriages of justice.
The day was jam packed with content and helpful information and many came away with 'to do' lists of actions to follow-up and books to read.
The next time The Advocates Gateway now has a series of 2 hour masterclasses on special measures and vulnerable people in the civil and family courts and the use of communication aids. Solicitors are welcome to attend. Please see the booking form autumnmasterclassesbookingform.
