Resembling an old-fashioned penguin paperback with its bold orange and white cover, the latest (11th) edition of the Commercial Court guide looks set to be far more forward-looking than any of its predecessors. Significant developments since the last edition (published in 2017) are reflected in its updated guidance. There is a welcome emphasis on the importance of allowing more junior advocates to develop their practice with actual courtroom experience, following a trend (exacerbated by the pandemic) of appointing QC’s for even relatively minor interlocutory hearings. There is also a welcome indication that the Commercial Courts are serious about moving to a wholly paperless model wherever possible, something that will go hand in hand with the stated intention to ensure that all hearings up to half a day in length will be undertaken remotely, by default.
